Course Content

For Tax Professionals Preparing for Examinations

The 1040 IRS Prep Series is an intensive program for tax professionals who want an in-depth study of individual tax law.

This program is designed to prepare you for the IRS national tax preparer competency exams. The series is a favorite for preparers studying for Oregon's rigorous LTC exam. It is also recommended for anyone who is preparing for the individual portion of the IRS Special Enrollment Examination.

Completion Time

Recommended completion time for this series of courses is 4-8 weeks. The structure of this course allows students to work at their own pace. Students will participate in a series of lectures provided by Pacific Northwest Tax School instructor April Gutierrez.

Classwork is provided for students to apply concepts covered in each course to sample tax forms. Each course will finish with a quiz to test student's knowledge of the topics covered. Course materials provided to students with every course include:

  • A detailed Student Manual
  • Classwork answer keys
  • Quizzes and quiz answer keys
  • Homework answer keys upon successful completion of each course

The 1040 IRS Prep Series includes up to 93 hours of CPE. Students have one year to complete all course assignments and receive continuing education for completed courses. CPE is awarded at the time each course is completed which means CPE can be spread over 2 renewal periods.

Learning Objectives

Students will be provided with an in-depth study of individual tax law. The program is intended for individuals who have an understanding of basic tax law and are preparing for the Enrolled Agent exam, the upcoming IRS licensing exam, or the Oregon LTC exams. By the conclusion of this program, students will be educated in the following areas of individual tax law:

  • Filing requirements of individuals
  • Filing status and dependency rules
  • Reporting and calculating taxability of retirement income
  • Identifying and reporting earned income
  • Investment income and expenses
  • Federal deductions and tax credits
  • Business income and expense reporting for sole proprietors
  • Calculating and reporting capital gains
  • Passive activity income and expense rules
  • Alternative minimum tax
  • IRS Ethics Rules

Format Delivery

The interactive structure of this course combines the best elements of a live class with the convenience of allowing students to work at their own pace. Students will watch a video-recording of a lecture provided by one of Pacific Northwest Tax School's skilled instructors.

To successfully complete this course, students must watch the lecture video and successfully complete all tests with a score of 70% or higher.

A Q&A Forum is provided in the LMS for this course. Self-paced Online students may use the Q&A Forum to post questions and receive answers from course instructors about topics and assignments included with this course.

Basic Tax Law

Students taking any Basic Tax Law course, agree to comply with all Terms of Enrollment outlined the enrollment agreement form for that course, which can be found in the Introductory Session (Session 0) of each course.

Prerequisites & Advance Preparation

Students intending to write the Oregon State Tax Exam, must be at least 18 years of age, and have High School Diploma or GED. Students using our self-paced internet based program should prepare for classes by downloading and printing course materials. Cancellations/Refunds

Continuing professional education courses including interactive, non-interactive and correspondence program fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Webinars/Webcasts are non-transferable and in most cases non-refundable. A student may choose to be switched to another Webinar/Webcast of equal or lesser value if a conflict with the scheduled time exists. In the case of a missed Webinar/Webcast a request to transfer to a new Webinar/Webcast must be made with 48 hours of when the Webinar/Webcast aired. Refunds will be issued ONLY prior to the start of the Webinar/Webcast. A $15.00 processing fee will be withheld from all refund amounts.
